Introduction
Yo!
You’re back again? πππ»
Want to know some more interesting things? π€
That’s a yes… Isn’t it?
Awesome stuff…
I’m going to try and be my energetic and cheery self in this article. Lot’s of research and knowledge finding went into this.
I have covered very briefly, about the Advanced section in the Bluesky for EXiters – You’re Setting Me Up? article which is used to store Labeller accounts, the link will take you to the article should you need it.
Before I continue, I’m just going to ask if you could consider buying me a coffee. You can do that on the link below.
Buy Mike Jay a coffee through his Amicite account on Ko-Fi.
Now let’s talk labels and labellers!
As always, there’s a contents menu… It’s somewhere around here… with quick links to specific sections on this article, which will take you straight to that point.
You can even right click on the links and Copy link address and when you share them, it’ll take those clicking on it… directly to that section.
I also added a Google Translate function to the site. If you need to view the page in any other language, you can now do so. I hope it’s helpful.
Let’s continue. Shall we?
The Basics
It's stuff you need to know
What is a labeller?
Labellers (Advanced in the settings section under Moderation) are a single or multiple moderation tools that add labels to Bluesky user accounts for the purposes of providing safety to users, for fun and for the purposes of gaming (yes, there are labeller games) and to aid in categorization.
Don’t worry! There’s a list of them further in the article.
If you have a labeller that isn’t listed, send me a message on Bluesky.
What are labels?
Labels appear underneath a users Display Name and @ Handle regardless of where they appear, including on your profile. If you end up with one or multiple, other users who are subscribed to a Labeller, can have that Labeller, warnΒ or mute you as a result of that characteristics or personality traits, which can include negativity towards or intolerance of protected groups and minorities.
Labeller accounts?
Labeller accounts are maintained by a moderator which is also a user on Bluesky,Β who assign labels to the users profile and content (posts and replies).
Theses labels are applied usually through the following circumstances:
Reviewing user reports
Made through the post, reply or profile reporting tool. These labels tend to highlight possible negative aspects of a persons character.
These Labellers will append a label to your and other peoples accounts when they receive a report through the reporting tool or through their labeller accounts posts and replies. These are usually added based on negative, inflammatory, hate or misinformation towards protected groups and minorities. If reporting through the labellers account by posting or replying; proof of the offending aspect should be provided.
Doing so should stop Mislabelling.
Often, these labels from such profiles that look to protect groups and minorities, through custom Moderation tools will require you to appeal the label but only if you can prove you did nothing wrong.
Automatically
Added to everyone’s profiles when the conditions are met. These labels tend to be factual or humorous.
These Labellers set labels based on a set of profile or user content (posts and replies) conditions. These labellers, don’t usually require any input but in certain cases, you can request to have the label removed from the labellers profile or by appealing the label.
Manually
It’s on you to request these. They tend to be positive and informative.
Some labellers will only add labels to your profile if you request it, or follow a set of simple to follow actions. And, if you already have them, but don’t want them anymore, a simple request to remove or following the actions indicated on the labellers profile will remove them.
Things you should see on a Labeller account:
Its header and profile image
A Subscribe or Unsubscribe button
An ellipsis (3 dots) menu which includes Share, Follow Account The Labeller is a profile account, therefore, you can follow it, Add to Lists, Mute Account, Block Account and Report Account
The Labellers name
The Labellers @ handle
Labellers work on a DID:PLC: code, like your profile does.
Its description (if it has one)
A Like/Heart icon button
A Lists tab (will be used by the labeller to update users on their lists)
A Labels tab
A Posts tab
A Replies tab
Questions?
I know you probably have them
Do I have to Subscribe to a labeller to see their labels across Bluesky?
Yes, you do.
Except for the Bluesky Moderation Service, this is built into the service.
You can Subscribe to any of the labellers by pressing the Subscribe to Labeller button.
You can remove them from view again by pressing Unsubscribe once subscribed.
Does Unsubscribing remove the label from my account and content?
No. It doesn’t, it will only hide the label from your view
If you want a label removing, you need to appeal it whilst being subscribed to the labeller that has applied the label to you.
I'm not happy with the labels the labeller has placed on my profile and content, does blocking remove them?
No. It doesn’t.
To anyone else using the labeller, they will continue to see the label(s) on your profile.
However, if the labeller has added you to a List, which is being read by the labelling script, it will hide you from the list when you block them, should people try to find you on it.
Can you block the Bluesky Moderation Service?
According to the ellipsis button on the account, you can. But DON’T!
The following issues WILL occur:
1. You can STILL be labelled.
2. You won’t be able to choose the Warn/Show Label and Hide options to protect yourself from those labelled from the 22 infraction labels that it provides.
3. Doing so, will give you a social media experience similar or worse than that of X/Twitter. Do you really want that? π¬
Wait, why am I still labelled if I block them?
A Labeller would or could use the Lists function of Bluesky to easily add and remove people on those lists.
Blocking would hide you on this list, from public view to all other users.
Blocking won’t remove you from the list, therefore, the label(s) remain attached to your profile.
The data in the list is still public. And therefore, the labelling script can read the lists contents.
Okay… Do you understand the purpose of labels, labelling and Labeller accounts?
No? Tough. I think I’ve explained things rather well.
Yes? Awesome… Time to explain how to use the labeller as your moderation tool…
Then a list of Labellers, their function(s) and other important details. π
Reporting & appealing
Report the bad, Appeal the wrong
Reporting Posts, Replies and Profiles
Finding the Report Post/Reply menu option
Reporting a post or reply is simple. Press the ellipsis (3 dots) on the offending post or reply.
Then selecting Report Post from the bottom of the menu that appears
Finding the Report Account menu option
You can also use the same method when going to a persons account
Go to the profile and press the ellipsis (3 dots) and select Report Account
Step 1 - Selecting a Moderator
Both actions above will ask you to Select moderator
Press on Bluesky Moderation Service
Step 2 - Reporting the post/reply/account
The next screen is the report this post/account screen with a list of choices.
Select the option you need.
If it’s not listed here, select other.
At this point, the progression may change.
Let’s see what happens in the Other screen.
Step 3 - Selecting additional Moderators and writing your Report
It’ll ask you again to Select the moderator service(s) to report to
If what you’re reporting matches any other moderation services, tick them, you can select multiple. But don’t report the issue of Transphobia, for example, to anything that doesn’t have a label for it.
In this example, no other tick box needs to be ticked.
If you had the Asuka’s Anti-Transphobia Field labeller, you’d make sure that the tick box for that and the Bluesky Moderation Service were ticked.
Now, enter any optional or relevant information/reasoning about why you’re making the report, using words that the labeller, has as labels is useful.
Then press Send Report.
There you go. Simples.
Appealing an assigned label
- Make sure you’re Subscribed to the labeller.
Follow the instructions in the Subscribe section. - Go to your profile.
- You’ll see a bar under your bio that reads “# labels have been placed on this account“, tap or click on this bar.
- A popup box will appear listing your visible labels (as a result of those Labellers you’re assigned to), on the one you want to appeal, press the Appeal button.
- Now, type in a reason, as to why you want the label removed and press Submit.
Please note: If the labeller has added a label intended to protect minorities/groups of individuals including the vulnerable, the Label Moderator might expect proof of never performing that act you were labelled for or “That you understand that you did something wrong and you have or you will have learnt from your actions you’re labelled for” like a certain one requests.
Repeat offenders known to repeat the same things, tend to be suspended as a result of building evidential infractions. This only occurs through the Bluesky Moderation Service.
Protect yourself with labellers
Warn and block. Hide and never see.
Finding the Bluesky Moderation Service
Let’s have a look at how to use Labellers, specifically Bluesky Moderation Service.
Let’s head there.
In your sidebar press Settings -> Moderation and scroll down this page to the Advanced section, there it is π
Give it a tap and make sure you’re on the labels tab
Oh before I forget, you could just click the link below
Bluesky Moderation Service
What are the Labeller Options and how to use them
So, as I indicated in the article earlier, you can choose how those who are labelled by the Bluesky Moderation Service and every other labeller are displayed or not.
Each of the options on each of the labels changes how it is displayed on the platform.
Here’s what each option does:
Off – Posts, replies and users with this label will remain visible.
Show badge – Posts, replies and users with this label will be visible but a badge will be displayed underneath their Display Name and @ Handle.
Warn – Posts, replies with this label will be masked by a bar, warning you of the label they have received with a Show/Hide button, the users profile name will be visible.
Hide – Posts, replies and users with this label will be hidden completely from view and any notifications from responses will be disabled.
On each labeller, there could be a small or a huge number of labels.
And it’s up to you how you set it.
However, if it’s an Automatic labeller like the Profile Labeller, keep it set to Show badge. The same goes with the Game Labellers.
Locked options Require Content Filters
I bet you’re confused about the locked in place and automatically set to Hide options regarding adult content.
I did mention this on my Settings article and clicking the link here will walk you though that process:

You know how I mentioned that labels are not visible unless you’re subscribed to the labeller?
And how that means you don’t know what labels have been attached to your profile?
Well, there’s a tool to find out
Click the link below
Enter your Bluesky @ Handle (“yourname”.bsky.social or whatever you’re using)
And press Search.
When the results are displayed, you’ll see the label on the left and the link to the Labeller on the right, clicking that link will allow you to see the Labeller on Bluesky
The Labeller Library
There's 47 labellers here! π±
The labellers below are organised to specific types of labelling.
If you’re a label moderator and the information about your labeller is incorrect or non-existent. Send me a direct message on Bluesky: Mike Jay
This section was last updated on the 18th of November 2024.
Moderation
Moderation is exactly that, moderation.
These labellers will label profiles based on negative, questionable and possibly unlawful user aspects.
You can use these labellers to PROTECT yourself.
User/personality specific
User and personality specific labels are all about who you are, what you like and how you feel.
These labellers typically require you to manually request the label(s) you want, to be added to your account.
So, you’re in control of what you share in that regards.
Profile specific
Profile specific labellers typically apply labels automatically about your account.
And they’re factual.
Can’t really argue with that.
Professions and skills
Professions and skills labellers are a great way to add whether you’re working, or not and what skills you have…
Just like LinkedIn!
Which is just what we need on Bluesky.
Gaming
How do you add games to Bluesky?
You use a labeller!
There’s 2 here, have at it!
Utility
Utilities can highlight or indicate things you might want to avoid or hide completely.
Useful.
Content specific
Profile specific labellers typically apply labels automatically about your account.
And they’re factual.
Can’t really argue with that.
Fun/Satirical
Fun and Satirical labellers tend to be hilarious.
Especially when you find out that you’re going to die by jumping into a volcano after proclaiming that you’re immortal.
Thanks for that The Cave of Trophonius.
celebrity/Fan
I’m sure there are some fans of Taylor Swift on Bluesky.
And other types of fans.
So, I’m adding celebrity and fan labellers.
Other
These labellers will pick up on tiny quirks or actions of a user and may be being used for the purposes of being malicious.
I would personally try to avoid this type of labeller.
And you should.
Adult Content
You may have a kink…
I don’t.
Outro
So long... Farewell
And that’s it on Labels, Labelling, Labellers and what it means for moderation settings.
And I’ll leave it at that.
Thanks for sticking around and reading this. It’s been fun. ππ»π
